Are you out of new diets to try? Does it feel like you can stick with a diet for a few weeks and then you lose control?
Maybe you’re even feeling desperate to experience feeling better in your body and around food?
That’s where the non-diet approach comes in. It’s a way to escape the stress and frustration of dieting and reconnect with your body in a sustainable way.
If you’ve been wondering if there’s a better path forward, let’s explore how this approach works and why it might be exactly what you’re looking for.
Let’s clear up some common misunderstandings right off the bat:
Not quite. It’s about learning to identify and trust your body’s signals—like hunger and fullness. Then, making food choices that feel good both physically and emotionally.
Actually, research shows that health is about more than just a number on the scale. The non-diet approach focuses on sustainable habits like eating foods that nourish you (not just physically), moving in ways you enjoy, and managing stress.
Let’s remember that health includes many factors besides just food and exercise. Social determinants of health like community support, access to care, and mental well-being all play critical roles in our ability to be “healthy”.
This approach works for everyone, whether you’re managing something like diabetes or just want to feel better in your body. It’s about working with your unique needs, not against them.
Here’s more research to show how a non-diet approach to eating is helpful, and that there are harms when it comes to dieting and weight cycling.
A non-diet dietitian takes a completely different approach than traditional, weight-centric providers. Here’s how:
My journey to becoming a non-diet dietitian began with my own struggles. As someone who has navigated the complexities of diet culture and experienced the harm it can cause, I knew there had to be a better way.
My background as a Division 1 athlete initially sparked my interest in nutrition, but my recovery from disordered eating and getting my master’s in nutrition changed the way I viewed health and wellness. I learned that true health isn’t about restriction or perfection—it’s about reducing stress, adding in nourishment, and connection to your body.
That’s why I’ve dedicated my career to helping others break free from dieting and build a healthier relationship with food and their bodies. Using a non-diet approach allows me to support clients in a way that feels sustainable, compassionate, and empowering.
